Title

Battle of Liberty Place Monument (New Orleans, Louisiana)

Description

The Battle of Liberty Place Monument is an obelisk erected shortly after the Battle of Liberty Place, an 1874 contest between the Democratic White League and the Reconstruction Era Louisiana state government over the control of the government of Louisiana. The monument commemorates the actions of the White League, which attempted to enforce white supremacy in the region. It has since become a symbol of racism in the city and, after decades of grassroots protests, was finally dismantled and removed in 2017.
