Heinze Park G.A.R. Memorial (Rifle, Colorado)

A grey granite marker engraved on four sides to commemorate Civil War veterans. The marker is composed of three blocks: the topmost block is of polished dark granite; the middle block is of smooth, light-grey granite; and the base block is of rough-carved, light-grey granite. The middle block includes a drinking fountain, restored in 2017. The marker was erected by the citizens of Rifle, Colorado to honor the G.A.R. and L. of G.A.R. and is located in the center of Heinze Park. The memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 2017, and re-dedicated 100 years later on May 30, 2017.

Inscription:

The topmost block of the marker is engraved on all four sides. The north side is engraved with a 10-star US flag with the words, "G.A.R. 1881-1888" carved inside a 5-pointed star. The south side of that block is engraved with a 10-star US flag with "FCL" and "L. of G.A.R. 1886" carved above and below the flag. The east side of that block is engraved with the words, "Erected by the Citizens of Rifle in Honor of the G.A.R. and L. of G.A.R., May 30, 1917." The west side of that block is engraved with the words, "In Honor of our Nation's Heroes 1861-1865" below an engraving of a 38-star US flag. The middle block is engraved on the east side with the words, "Rededicated by the City of Rifle and SUVCW Legion of the West, Camp 7, May 30, 2017."
