Cornwall Civil War Monument (Cornwall)

Other

This obelisk is the first monument dedicated to the c. 40,000 Canadian soldiers who fought in the American Civil War. These soldiers fought for both the Union and Confederate armies, though the majority served with the Union. 29 Canadians received the Medal of Honor for their actions. At the time of the war, Canada was still controlled by Britain, which officially remained neutral. Canada had a large abolitionist population, but many powerful figures in Britain favored the Confederacy and prompted some Confederates to run a massive recruitment drive in Canada. Standing at 14 feet tall, and flanked with two eight-foot black granite side stones, it was funded by the Grays and Blues of Montreal""a Civil War reenactment society - and The American Civil War Historical Re-Enactment Society. 2 flag poles (USA and Canada) sit behind the obelisk and are surrounded by dedicated benches.
