Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument (Wheeling, West Virginia)

This monument features a central pediment with the angel of liberty (dressed in a robe, carrying a shield in her right arm and a sword in her left) and two seated soldiers, one on the west side of the pedestal and the other on the east side. The West Virginia seal and state motto 'Montani Semper Liberi' are engraved at the base of the angel's feet. 'To the Defenders of the Union 1861-1865' is inscribed at the base of the statue. The front side of the pedestal (atop the base) lists seven major Civil War Battles such as Rich Mountain, Antietam, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Cloyd Mountain, Opequan and Appomattox. The back side of the pedestal is engraved with the text: 'They counted not their lives dear unto them.'
