Thornsbury Bailey Brown Memorial (Grafton, West Virginia)

Union

This stone marker commemorates the place of death of Private Thornsbury Bailey Brown. On May 22, 1861, upon his return to Grafton from a rally in Pruntytown, West Virginia, Private Brown was killed at the Fetterman Bridge by members of a Confederate militia that would later become a company of the 25th Virginia Infantry Regiment. Based on this account, Thornsbury Bailey Brown is widely considered to be the first Union soldier to be killed by a Confederate soldier during the American Civil War. Brown’s grave can be found in the Grafton National Cemetery, where a 12-foot obelisk was erected in his memory.
