‘Commemorative Cultures: The Civil War Monuments Project’ is a research project conducted by Dr Kristen Treen from the School of English at the University of St Andrews.

This project aims to establish a more diverse account of commemoration regarding American Civil War monuments found across the U.S. and internationally by people who know them best: members of the communities who live with and around them. What does your local Civil War monument mean to you? Are there local stories or memories of that monument that have stayed with you? Have recent debates shaped how you notice your local monuments now, and how you feel about them?

Submission is voluntary. If you are interested submitting information about a monument or stories associated with a monument, please download a copy of the Participant Information Sheet. If submitting information distresses you, we encourage you to rethink participation, however download a copy of the Debrief form for support organisations.

If you have any questions, please email at monuments@st-andrews.ac.uk.

Your participation is entirely voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time.

By consenting, you agree to:

  • The information provided in the Participant Information Sheet,
  • That by providing my email address, the researchers will only use it to contact me in case of requesting more information,
